*BIG SNIP* Well even us on SURBL differ as to classification at times :) Jeff and I are a prime example. I know and understand Jeff's philosophy. However I think if plumbing fixture inc sends out a newsletter to a purchased list, or a hired marketing firm does it, then they SHOULD be listed. Call it an education in email usage. When they contact to get off the list, we educate and remove. No biggy. It is not hard at all to be removed from SURBL if you are legit. We have seen numerous times a legit company sending a newsletter to a spamtrap. Numerous reasons and excuses. But they never would have known about it if they were not listed. And I think if they send to a spamtrap we have a right to list. Regardless of how legit, it is a wakeup call because obviously something went wrong to send to a spamtrap. Now I can't go doing this, in respect to Jeff's wishes. However on the UC list I'm free to be as nutty as I want to be :) No UC isn't ready for prime time yet. Part of the problem is making sure I don't fall behind in WS work. --Chris

Having poked around some more, it seems that 1086 of those in Bill's list are IP addresses. I've just grabbed Bill's list of domains and compared it to my local domains blacklist, with some interesting results. The following is a breakdown (expressed in line counts, each line representing a domain) of the similarities and differences. 27546 comparelists.intersection 155709 comparelists.notboth 117662 comparelists.onlyin.localbl 38046 comparelists.onlyin.sa-blacklist.current.domains 183256 comparelists.union Quick interpretation: my local blacklist has 117662 domains not listed in SURBL. Bill's file has 38046 domains not listed in mine. We only have 27546 domains in common. The counts are a bit off, I realize, as I've got a few entries that I've simply commented out as well as a comment or two. Suggestion for surbl-checker on rulesemporium

Hi, I have a suggestion for the surbl-checker att rulesemporium.com. What do you think of adding a date when a certain link were added to the surbl list(s). My users report spam not catched in a public folder on our server, once a day i submit all reported spam to the surbl-checker to see if it's blocked or not. Most of the time the spam are blocked, but it would be nice if i could see a date/time when the link was blocked. :) Thanks in advance / Martin

ws updating again

The problems with ws.surbl.org not updating for the past day or so have been corrected. It looks like there was a bug in the updated rsync or linux distro that Bill had installed on his server. Have any of you seen fewer spams? I don't see many these days. About 15% of the spams I get are not in SURBL, but are by the time I try to add :) I have not done any study of domains that continue to try to spam despite being in SURBL. Any numbers on these? Possibly the most/longest hit domain in SURBL lookups?? SHould we post the top 25 lookups to SURBL? I think that SURBL is getting better, some graymarketers are cleaning up their acts, and my rules-based filering is also improving. However, a few days ago, I started getting slammed with mortgage spam using the following domains: dalehaym.biz dalehay.biz daleqhay.biz damphenm.biz darbherm.biz darbhero.biz darbkher.biz rbkher.biz (& others) An example spam is found here: http://www.pvsys.com/recentspamsample.txt In this example, the domain is: darbherm.biz ...but darbherm.biz doesn't resolve to anything. However, usa.darbherm.biz DOES resolve. (Of course, you have to go to the actual URL to get to a substantive page... see actual e-mail). (1) Could the fact that the baseline domain doesn't resolve have tricked us into thinking that these were no longer active? (2) Also, in a not-quite-applicable but related thought, should we rethink the policies for removing "dead" domains out of SURBL if they STILL appear in spams. For example, suppose a virus sends out the same spam for a now defunct domain over and over again... shouldn't such a domain STILL be listed in SURBL? Finally, maybe these particular domains I listed at the top of this message are not in SURBL because of having legit uses? But I must say that this particular "series" of spam came all of a sudden and ferociously frequent. For example, a couple of my clients would be getting at least a couple of dozen of these SAME e-mails **per day** if I hadn't adjusted my rules based filter to screen these out. Clearly, this kind of behavior where the spam is sent repeatedly each day is NOT playing by the rules. Rob McEwen

No, I'm thinking outside our 'norm'. This is not the sending IP. This is the hosting IP. You are correct in saying this will not stop spam coming. Unless SA starts to tag by looking up the IP of the URL. Which a certain ninja has been working on ;) This will stop any ads from showing up in the spam. This will allow others to black this so there users don't click on the junk being spamed. This will also say to ISPs, "Clean up your act, or no one will pay to be hosted by you anymore!". Its more an offensive strike against spam, rather then always being defensive. --Chris

The reason that I ask is because the sending server is not necessarily the same server/IP as the IP address that the domain name itself resolves to. This is important because the sending server's IP is what gets checked with regular RBL blocking. Rob McEwen

SC manual blacklist pruned

We have a manual blacklist for the SC list that I use to nudge records without enough hits onto SC (sooner than they otherwise would): http://spamcheck.freeapp.net/blacklist-domains I've pruned that list, removing domain names that have had no NS records for three successive checks over about five weeks. That has reduced the manual blacklist list by about 270 records. Before removing those I checked to see how many DNS hits they were getting and only notinuse.biz had any of significance, so we kept that one on the manual blacklist. SC will probably be manually pruned again some time in future, but the list (both automatic and manual) is so small and effective to begin with that it tends not to need to much manual maintenance. Note that cleaning up the manual blacklist is not the same as whitelisting. Any record that comes off the manual blacklist can be manually or automatically blacklisted again in future at any time if it appears in spams again. So it's not at all a "free pass" to spammers or anything like that. It just means some domains that are unusable and don't appear in any recent spams are no longer included on SC for now. If they get used again, they'll get listed again. I still plan to re-write the SC-specific engine and the general data engine used for processing the SURBL data. The main features will be more uniform processing of the data, including public logs of additions, deletions, whitelists, etc. Aside from SC, the results should be identical, and I will run them in parallel for a while to make sure that's the case. The SC data will be handle more efficiently and probably have an resolved-IP-based biasing system to get the domains of persistent spammers onto SC sooner, automatically. Not us. THings are holding pretty steady. Two days 43,000 e-mails, 32,000 spam (Each rounded up about a hundred). Dan "whitehouse.com" Parasi announced he was changed his focus from adult porn to real-estate earlier this year, and that he was selling Whitehouse.com Inc and the 100s of domains in it's possession. Certainly, such mail **deserves** to get blocked because of the "company it keeps"... but try explaining that to a client. Basically IP blocking is very drastic. Going from SURBL blocking to IP blocking is like using a sledgehammer rather than a surgeon's scalpel. I'm not against this approach. But consider that not everyone used SpamAssassin. Some programs can't automatically check the nameserver's IP against RBLs, etc. Also, I strongly recommend not taking these out of SURBL. Certainly, it would be good to encourage people to block in ways that save processing time and lookups where needed. But don't use that as an excuse to remove these because not everyone will be know to do this type of blocking and removing these from SURBL will give them a pass. (not to mention, what happens if the domain name stays the same, but switches hosting providers?) Rob McEwen

I'm seeing these in my name server logs... obviously it isn't working on my server. Meaning this (comcast) virused machine is trying to (appears to be) injecting some type of data into my named (bind) server. Also am still getting a whole whale of surbl queries to the wrong IP/DNS server here. In other words servers are trying to get surbl returns from my bind server and not my rbldnsd server. -Doc
